Title: Come See The New Colt

Artist: Jessica Zemsky.  The tender side of life is Jessica Zemsky’s primary interest; she paints it with a loving, delicate understanding. Along with a diverse and vivacious palette, her paintings have an animated spontaneity that passes onto their viewers. From her foundation of artistic strength, Zemsky’s artistic stature is ever growing.

Jessica Zemsky believes that the greatest achievement of an artist is to have his work recognized without a signature. The thrust of Zemsky’s art is to present her feelings to her viewers — her impressions and reactions to her subjects. She feels that an artist’s success comes from working all of his life on his art, that there is no end to study, observation and application. Currently living in Montana, Zemsky says that her work is “mostly people oriented. I paint not a nostalgic look back to a lost time but an unexpected view of life in Montana today. I believe my work shows my love and deep commitment to the feelings of rural and mountain life as it is still lived in places like Montana.”

Born and raised in New York City, Zemsky studied at the Pratt Institute of Art, graduated with top honors, and, she says, “took art everywhere in New York that offered classes.” She is a founding member of the Western Rendezvous of Art, the Plein Air Artists of America and the Pastel Society of America. Her paintings and portraits are in private collections and museums in America and Europe.

Zemsky works in all media, but her “most adored” is gouache because it is a water-based paint, and it is as traditional as oil or transparent watercolor. It is also the silky, opalescent quality of gouache and the possibilities of using it thickly or with thin transparent washes that appeals to her. It was also much favored by Impressionist painters, which may explain a part of her attraction to gouache. Zemsky’s joyful and richly textured paintings reflect her love of her medium and her subjects.
