Self – Portrait with Spanish Objects
Miniature Print 4 x 5 1/4 inches
Reproduction of original
Artist bio- Alvar Sunol was born in Barcelona and studied art there, but like so many artists was drawn to Paris in his youth. He now lives in Paris, although the Spanish influence remains strong in his work- his prints and paintings are filled with Spain’s traditional colors, costumes, mustical instruments, flowers and fabrics, forming patterns among haunting faces. A first one-man show, held when Alvar was just twenty-two, and numerous others in Paris, Barcelona, New York, London, New Orleans and other cities are evidence of the artist’s firmly esablished and successful career.
Art description- A mirror within the still-life composition reflects the artist himself-but Alvar shows himself not so much in his shadowy self-portrait as in the lively picture of the world he sees and re-creates according to his own unique vision. The richly ornamental composition exploits exciting differences of shape and pattern-fruits, decorated vessels and an unusual checkerboard texture achieved by embossing.
