Bernard Pothast, born November 30, 1882 in Hal, Belgium. From 1904 to 1907, he studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He was deeply influenced by a professor at the school, A. Allebe. He was also a follower of the Hague School, regarded as the Dutch equivalent of French Impressionists. His speciality was painting interior scenes depicting children, often with toys and other objects which have interest and historic value. It has eve been suggested that he used his wife and children as models in his paintings.  Pothast died in Laren, in 1966. To date, his paintings continue to be among the very popular and can still be found in private collections all over the world.
